Raven found me after an hour of trudge later. I was relieved to clamber up his side. The shore was further away than I’d expected, and my legs were beginning to ache. The flight time was short, and we had a half hour to wander along the beach. I enjoyed wriggling my toes in the surf, which seemed to amuse the dragon.

The sun was descending towards the edge of the mist when I jammed my feet back into boots and took my place on Raven’s neck. A half-dozen puffins joined our flight back to the ship. They made their usual inelegant landing on the deck. Raven filled his gas chamber before he descended to the upper deck, tucking in his wings to avoid the sails.

Johno looked up from the lower deck. ‘Youse have a bonza time?’

‘I caught a large boar,’ Raven said smugly. ‘And I used a lake for a long soak.’

‘I also had a bath.’ I climbed down from the dragon, and placed a hand on his shoulder to balance against a twinge from my knees. ‘And I brought back some fresh fruit. Did Clyde ever go ashore?’

Johno jerked his head to one side. ‘No, the lad’s stuffed.’

‘That’s a pity,’ I said. ‘It would’ve been good for him to see the island, since he’s the one who managed to get us through the mist.’

‘That’s rubbish,’ Johno replied. ‘We saw it clear as day from up top. The ship was bogged when it was only the snail. Then you went forward, and that’s when the mist pulled aside. The island let us in because of you.’

The captain strode away to talk to his first mate. I stared at the island, dumbfounded. ‘Is that true, Raven?’

‘It is,’ the dragon confirmed. ‘You say that Clyde has the purest soul of anyone you’ve ever known. Maybe you should ask yourself who helped him to develop that. It certainly didn’t come from his first mother.’

I felt something glide down my cheek. A tear? I wiped it away, then headed down to the galley. Time to unload my fruit, and to check up on Clyde. As I descended, I heard the anchor chain clanking and Emblyn shouting out orders about sails. Our brief time in paradise was over.
